After Student’s Tragic Death

A wave of anger and mourning swept across Odisha today as the state
observed a complete shutdown (bandh) following the tragic death of a
20-year-old college student from Balasore. The student, who was a second-year
undergraduate at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, succumbed to burn
injuries after she allegedly attempted self-immolation, citing continuous
sexual harassment and administrative negligence.
The incident has sparked massive outrage, with opposition political
parties, students, activists, and citizens taking to the streets demanding justice
and accountability. Public life came to a halt as shops, schools, colleges,
and transport services remained shut across major cities and towns.
The Incident That Shocked the State
The 20-year-old student had reportedly faced prolonged harassment by
a senior faculty member, believed to be the Head of Department (HoD) in her
college. Despite repeatedly lodging complaints with the college principal and
higher authorities, no substantial action was taken.
Feeling ignored and helpless, the young woman attempted self-immolation
on the college premises last week. She was immediately rushed to AIIMS
Bhubaneswar with severe burn injuries. After battling for her life for
several days, she sadly passed away earlier this week.
Her death has left the entire state — especially the student community —
shaken, sparking widespread demands for action and accountability.
Statewide Shutdown and Protests
In response to the incident, the Odisha Congress, backed by at
least eight opposition parties, called for a statewide bandh on July 17.
From Balasore to Bhubaneswar, Cuttack to Berhampur, people took to the
streets to voice their grief and protest the government's alleged failure to
protect a young life.
Protesters, holding banners and placards demanding "Justice for
Our Sister" and "Punish the Guilty", blocked roads,
staged rallies, and gathered in large numbers across public spaces. Women and
student groups participated in large numbers, underlining the growing concern
for safety in educational institutions.
Disruption of Public Life
The bandh affected daily life across Odisha:
- Shops and
markets remained shut in major urban centers.
- Public and
private transport stayed off the roads.
- Educational
institutions, including schools and colleges, declared a holiday.
- Rail
traffic in some regions was affected due to road blockades near railway
stations.
- Government
offices saw very low attendance.
Authorities confirmed that no major violence was reported, but tensions
remained high in some areas.
Security Tightened
The Odisha government deployed extensive police force across the
state to ensure law and order. Over 80 platoons of security personnel
were mobilized, particularly in Balasore and Bhubaneswar.
Barricades were set up in sensitive areas to control the crowds and
avoid clashes between political groups or agitators. Emergency services
remained active throughout the day.
Political Leaders React
Bhakta Charan Das, President of the Odisha Pradesh Congress
Committee (OPCC), stated during a press briefing:
“This is not about politics. It’s about ensuring our daughters feel safe
in schools and colleges. We want justice — not just for this one student, but
for every girl who is being silenced.”
He demanded the resignation of the state's Education Minister,
the local MLA, and the MP, holding them morally responsible for
the administration’s failure to act on time.
Suresh Panigrahi, senior leader of the CPI(M), demanded a judicial
investigation into the incident, stating that the student had appealed to
multiple authorities — including the District Collector, Superintendent
of Police, and even the Education Ministry — but no meaningful
intervention came.
Rahul Gandhi Offers Support
In a heartfelt gesture, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi spoke
to the grieving father of the victim. Expressing sorrow, he called the death of
the student “a wound to society.”
“Her voice was not just a cry for help — it was a cry for justice. We
will not rest until accountability is ensured,” Rahul Gandhi said in a social
media post.
He also accused the ruling state government of negligence, calling the
death “an organized failure of the system” and demanded strong action
against those involved in covering up or ignoring the student’s complaints.
What Protesters Demand
The primary demands raised during the bandh include:
- Immediate arrest
of the accused faculty member
- Resignation
of education officials for negligence
- Establishment
of sexual harassment complaint cells in all colleges and
universities
- A fast-track
judicial inquiry into the incident
- Mental
health and safety support systems for students in Odisha

the future is a grim reminder of the systemic failures in handling
harassment cases. The Odisha Bandh is not just a political movement — it is

everyone is united in one message: Enough is enough. We demand
accountability.
The government must act — not just with statements, but with meaningful reforms that ensure no other student has to suffer in silence again.
