What Is English Grammar?
English grammar is the set of rules that explain how words are used in the English language to form correct sentences, phrases, and questions. It includes parts of speech, sentence structure, tenses, punctuation, and more.
Main Components of English Grammar
1. Parts of Speech (8 Types)
These are the basic building blocks of English.
1. Noun - Names a person, place, thing - Apple, India, Ramesh
2. Pronoun - Replaces a noun - He, she, it, they
3. Verb - Shows action or state - Run, is, have
4. Adjective - Describes a noun - Tall, red, beautiful
5. Adverb - Describes verbs/adjectives - Quickly, very, well
6. Preposition - Shows position/time - On, in, under
7. Conjunction - Connects words/sentences - And, but, because
8. Interjection - Expresses emotion - Wow! Oh! Hurray!
2. Sentence Structure
A sentence must have:
> Subject (who/what the sentence is about)
> Verb (what the subject is doing)
> Object (who/what receives the action)
Example: She (subject) is eating (verb) an apple (object).
3. Tenses (Time of Action)
English has 3 main tenses, each with 4 forms:
- Present Simple - I play.
- Present Continuous - I am playing.
- Present Perfect - I have played.
- Present Perfect Continuous - I have been playing.
(Same structure applies for past and future tenses.)
4. Active and Passive Voice
>Active: The subject does the action.
"She wrote a letter."
>Passive: The subject receives the action.
"A letter was written by her."
5. Direct and Indirect Speech
>Direct: He said, “I am tired.”
>Indirect: He said that he was tired.
6. Articles (a, an, the)
>A / An – Used for general or single items.
>The – Used for specific items.
7. Punctuation
Use punctuation marks like . , ? ! ; : “ ” ’ to make writing clear and correct.
