India to Begin Evacuation of
Citizens from Israel Amid Rising Regional TensionsNew Delhi | June 19, 2025 |
By Mr TPM News Desk
Amid
escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Government of India on Thursday
announced that it will begin the evacuation of Indian nationals currently
residing in Israel who wish to return home. The decision follows recent
developments, including a reported Israeli airstrike on Iran’s Arak nuclear
facility and warnings of possible retaliatory action.
India's
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that preparations are underway for
a phased evacuation and that Indian embassies in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are in
touch with citizens to coordinate logistics.
“Given
the evolving security situation in the region, the Government of India has
decided to facilitate the return of Indian nationals who wish to leave Israel.
Necessary arrangements are being made, and details will be shared shortly,”
said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press briefing in New Delhi.
Special Flights to Be
Arranged
Officials
have indicated that special Air India and Indian Air Force (IAF) flights will
be deployed to evacuate citizens on a voluntary basis. The evacuation process
is expected to prioritize students, workers, and tourists who are currently in
high-risk zones.
“We
are committed to ensuring the safety of all Indians abroad. The situation is
being monitored closely, and adequate support will be provided at every stage,”
the spokesperson added.
Local
Indian embassies have urged all Indian citizens in Israel to register with the
embassy or consulate at the earliest and to remain in close contact for
updates.
Advisory Issued, Travel
Discouraged
On
Wednesday, the MEA issued a fresh travel advisory asking Indian nationals to
avoid non-essential travel to Israel, Iran, Lebanon, and surrounding
conflict-affected areas. Those already present in these regions were advised to
stay indoors, avoid large gatherings, and follow local authorities'
instructions.
“Indian
nationals are urged to exercise utmost caution and remain vigilant at all
times,” the advisory read.
The
Indian government has also activated emergency helpline numbers for family
members seeking information about relatives abroad.
Approximately 18,000
Indians in Israel
According
to official estimates, around 18,000 Indian nationals are currently residing in
Israel. The majority are caregivers, medical professionals, students, and IT
workers. In addition, there are a few hundred tourists and business travelers.
Many
Indians living in Israel have expressed concern following recent military
activity in the region. Several Indian students in Tel Aviv said they were
“anxiously waiting” for evacuation announcements.
“Our
families back home are very worried. We just want to return safely for now,”
said Aditya Menon, an engineering student from Kerala currently studying in
Haifa.
Previous Evacuations
Recalled
India
has conducted similar large-scale evacuation efforts in the past. Notably, Operation Ganga brought back thousands of
Indian students stranded in Ukraine in 2022, and Vande Bharat Mission helped repatriate citizens during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Analysts
believe that New Delhi is proactively responding to the Middle East crisis to avoid
any last-minute chaos, especially if hostilities between Israel and Iran
escalate further.
No Immediate Threat, But
Precautions in Place
Though
there have been no direct threats to Indian nationals in Israel so far, Indian
intelligence agencies are closely monitoring the situation. Israeli security
agencies have also assured full cooperation in safeguarding foreign residents.
Israel
remains on high alert following its strike on Iran’s Arak reactor, which it
claims was part of Iran’s nuclear weapons program — an allegation Iran denies.
Iranian officials have threatened retaliation, raising fears of wider regional
fallout.
Conclusion
The
coming days will be crucial as the region stands on edge. While the Indian
government has clarified that the evacuation is precautionary, the swift action
underscores New Delhi’s readiness to ensure the safety of its citizens
worldwide.
Further
announcements, including flight schedules and registration details, are
expected from the MEA and Indian embassies soon.
